A Good Paint Job Starts Before the Paint

The visible coat of paint is only part of a painting project. Preparation, patching, and finish selection all affect the final result.

Premier Handyman Group provides interior and exterior painting for Dallas–Fort Worth homes. A good result depends on more than the paint itself. Surface condition, preparation, patching, cleaning, appropriate primer where needed, caulk where appropriate, finish selection, and application all play a role in how the finished surface looks and how well it holds up.

We do not imply that every surface or specialty coating is supported. If a project involves a specialty finish outside our typical scope, we will let you know before work begins.

Where the work really happens

Surface Preparation

Preparation is one of the most important parts of a painting project, whether interior or exterior.

✓Cleaning

✓Removing loose or flaking paint

✓Light sanding

✓Patching

✓Drywall repair

✓Minor surface repair

✓Caulking appropriate joints

✓Protecting nearby surfaces

✓Primer where appropriate

Painting over loose, damaged, dirty, or unresolved moisture-affected surfaces can lead to poor results. We do not promise that every old coating can simply be painted over without preparation. If an older or unknown coating raises a potential hazardous-material concern, specialized evaluation or procedures may be appropriate before disturbing the surface.

What we look for

Common Paint & Finish Problems

Not every issue below has the same underlying cause, and each should be reviewed on its own.

✓Peeling

✓Flaking

✓Cracking

✓Fading

✓Scuffs

✓Stains

✓Patch visibility

✓Nail pops

✓Damaged drywall areas

✓Chipped trim

✓Caulk gaps

✓Previous touch-ups that do not match

✓Recurring moisture staining

Before repainting

Moisture Stains & Recurring Paint Failure

Recurring staining or peeling may indicate that an underlying condition should be investigated before repainting.

We do not offer or imply diagnosis of hidden plumbing leaks, roof leaks, mold, or structural damage. What we can do is point out a visible pattern that is worth investigating before an area is painted again.

Painting is not a way to hide an unresolved problem. If a stain or paint failure keeps returning to the same spot, it is worth understanding why before the surface is recoated.

Educational overview

Color, Sheen & Finish Selection

A general look at common finish levels and how they are typically used.

Flat / matte

A non-reflective finish that can help hide minor surface imperfections, commonly used on ceilings and lower-traffic walls.

Eggshell

A subtle, slightly softer sheen than satin, often used on walls in living areas and bedrooms.

Satin

A common wall finish that balances a cleanable surface with a moderate sheen level.

Semi-gloss

A more reflective, durable finish often used on trim, doors, and higher-touch or higher-moisture areas.

There is no universal rule for which sheen is best. The right choice depends on several factors:

✓Room

✓Surface

✓Desired appearance

✓Cleaning expectations

✓Existing finish

✓Manufacturer recommendations

Choosing an approach

Touch-Up, Repaint, or Larger Project

A homeowner might consider a localized touch-up, painting one wall or area, repainting a full room, coordinating trim and walls, or a larger interior or exterior repaint.

Exact touch-up matching can be difficult because existing paint changes with age, light exposure, cleaning, and prior application. In some cases, repainting a full wall or room produces a more consistent result than a small touch-up.

Questions

Painting FAQs

Do walls need preparation before painting?

Yes, in most cases. Cleaning, patching, light sanding, and appropriate primer all contribute to how well a finished coat looks and holds up.

Can you paint over old paint?

Often, yes, as long as the existing surface is clean, sound, and properly prepared. Loose, flaking, or damaged paint should be addressed first.

Why is my paint peeling?

Peeling can relate to surface preparation, moisture, application conditions, or the condition of the underlying material. The actual surface should be reviewed before assuming a single cause.

Can you repair drywall before painting?

Yes. Minor drywall preparation, patching, and texture work are commonly coordinated with a painting project.

Can one wall be repainted instead of the whole room?

It can be, though exact touch-up matching can be difficult since existing paint changes with age, light exposure, cleaning, and prior application.

Can you match an existing paint color?

We can work toward a close match using the product information available, but we do not guarantee an invisible match, especially with older or faded paint.

What paint sheen should I use?

It depends on the room, surface, desired appearance, cleaning expectations, and manufacturer recommendations. We can walk through the options for your space.

Can I send photos for an estimate?

Yes. Photos of the surfaces and any damage help us understand scope before providing an estimate.

What affects painting project cost?

Cost depends on square footage, number of rooms or surfaces, condition, preparation, trim and door work, height and access, and the number of coats needed.

Do recurring water stains need to be addressed before painting?

Yes. Recurring staining or peeling may indicate an underlying condition that should be investigated before the area is repainted again.
